Know Your Book Thickness
In order to effectively plan
book binding jobs, both the printer and bindery need to know book block
thickness.

First, consider PERFECT
BINDING. Many production problems can happen if planning and
production occur around an incorrect book thickness. For example, if
your cover has color breaks on the spine and the text bulk is too thin,
your bindery will be forced to “wrap” color onto the back cover.
In addition, spine copy will no longer be centered. Conversely, if
the book block is too thick, the art won’t cover the whole spine.
Different problems occur on
WIRE-O projects. First, book block thickness determines the required
wire size. Since most wire is preordered to meet tight turnaround
schedules, if your job unexpectedly needs a different wire size, valuable
time will be lost waiting for new wire.

The solution is simple.
During the planning stage, ask your paper supplier for stock to put
together a live BULKING DUMMY. Then, measure it before laying a
single drop of ink on paper. Remember: Paper bulk varies by
manufacturer and even production lot. DON’T ASSUME … MEASURE!
