THE LITTLE THINGS
As we all know, the little things often make the difference between a successful and unsuccessful job.
Here are five little things that can spoil a binding job during the planning stage:
  1. Not leaving enough space for Wire-O® punch holes. How much of an issue this is depends on the book's thickness.
  2. Not leaving wide enough trim margins on perfect bound covers to account for glue squeeze out (a.k.a. a glue trap). A corollary little thing: Butting the covers together on the press sheet when there is enough paper to spread them out.
  3. Printing only the requested quantity on a digital job. You must account for spoilage on digital jobs as well.
  4. Folding signatures with too much perf and not enough paper holding the spine together.
  5. Not protecting your perfect bound covers to prevent transit marking. Coatings, varnishes or film laminates should be applied to these books to form a protective layer. Seaboard would be happy to film laminate your books for you.
EXTRA LITTLE THING: Not asking your binder or finisher for layouts or other guidelines.

T-MINUS 3 WEEKS
Until our new two-sided laminator arrives. Here are a few tidbits that will whet your interest in Seaboard's two-sided laminating work:
  1. The right laminate film to use depends on whether your work is offset or digital. Be sure to let us know ahead of time.
  2. Use wax-free inks on your sheets. Coatings and varnishes may inhibit the ability of the film to adhere to printed surfaces. The use of spray powder should be minimized.
  3. For flush cut work, supply us with an oversized sheet; for edge seal work, the sheet should be cut to final size (we can cut it for you if needed).
  4. We can also round corner your laminated work.
  5. Stock between 10 and 18pts is ideal for laminating work. Text weight stocks and web stocks may wrinkle during lamination.
  6. For one side laminating, we need ½" margin of unlaminated stock on all four sides of the sheet.
