STATIC ELECTRICITY

Did you know that lightening and static electricity belong to the same family? They both require positive and negative charges to happen..

Even though it is not quite winter yet, it is time to give some thought to making your plant ready to deal with static electricity.  We all know that static creates havoc on certain types of paper.

Our friend Reno Cyr, Sr, lead folder operator at JS McCarthy Printers in Augusta, Maine, has generously allowed us to use some of his tips on controlling static.

Some of Reno's main suggestions:

  • Ground the main unit to the concrete floor.  Drill a hole and insert an anchor bolt to achieve as much of an earth ground as possible
  • Increase the moisture content in the air and place cool mist humidifier above or below the sheet path.  Find a way to add moisture to the paper.
  • Increase the gap between sheets in the feeder
  • Use tinsel as liberally as you can to disperse the static. Try to ground it so it acts as a discharge.
  • Keep your fold rollers as clean as possible. Remove as much offset powder as possible from the paper.
  • Make sure your fold rollers are in good shape. Clean with proper solvents so that the rubber does not expand.
  • Coat any bare metal with silicone. Spray on, wait for minute, then wipe off.
  • Try a heat lamp with the mist humidifier
  • Try placing some dryer sheets in the path of the paper as it folds. That is what the dryer sheets are made for.
  • Keep the machine running through lunch, keeping it warm.

Check out Reno's blog, where this and many other folding tips are offered.

Eurobind - Another Option for Lay-Flat Binding

For anyone looking for another perfect binding idea to offer your clients, why not try Eurobind, a take off on lay-flat binding?

Eurobind, also known as Swiss Brochure, is an easy to execute binding method showing a detached front cover opening to expose a decorative lining tape covering the spine plus Œ" into the text.  Any kind of end paper material can be used to color coordinate with the design of the text.

Eurobind has floated around in Europe (hence the name we have given it) for some time now, and can be a lay-flat binding as well.   For Eurobind and lay-flat binding in general, the best glues are cold glues (water based), but since cold glues take many hours to set we in the US don't use them much.   So we use PUR glue for Eurobind which gives it its best chance to lie flat.

Welcome to the Family!

As this newsletter is being produced, we are in the process of installing our brand new Muller Martini Pantera perfect binder.

The Pantera is a midrange binder with huge capability.   Most importantly, it is a quick changeover machine that will allow us to give an extra dose of service.  It also binds GREAT BOOKS!

We will now offer automatic signature recognition so that you can be assured of proper collation order.  There are various methods that you, the printer, can use to help this system work and we will deal with this in future newsletters.

Expert's View:

While talking with Jay Bellanca, our insightful Muller Martini sales rep regarding what he sees going on in the marketplace, he feels that both short and long run work will continue to thrive, while the mid range runs may be at risk.

There will always be the mega-runs of annual reports for the Fortune 500 companies, and there will be shorter run sales brochures and the increasing on-demand work.
